The Kalare Night Bazaar is situated about 1/3 of the way down from the top end of the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar on Chang Khlan Road. Look for the Kodak & 7 Eleven stores to find the entrance or go to the first side street past the 7 Eleven for the side entrance.

Tucked away from the bustle of the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar the Kalare Night Bazaar is a less hectic haven for a rest and is host to many shops including artist studios, jewellers, tour operators, shoe & clothing outlets and many others. Essentially it is a large undercover arcade full of shops with an open food court and entertainment area. The food court is unusual in that it operates on a "Coupon Dining" system.

There are several dining options here. The main one is all around the outside of the eating area is occupied by a line of food vendors, each in their own booth. Usually a wide range to suits most tastes, like Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Vegetarian, Seafood etc. Each vendor has their own specialty dishes on display, usually about 6-8 dishes for sale. All dishes on display show a price tag (ie. 20THB, 40THB, 60THB etc). Simply pick what you want and while you pick a table it is cooked immediately, then just tuck in some great food.

Just outside the main area there are now some newer dining options like big seafood restaurants. Have a stroll around all of them and pick whatever takes your fancy.

A good variety of dishes plus a cold drink, usually more than enough to feed two people, can be had all up for less than 300THB ($10). Give it a try, beats your normal takeaway places by a mile.

If you are looking to buy your own food to take home to cook, take a stroll about 2 minutes North of the Kalare Night Bazaar to the Warorot Markets. This is where all the locals buy their meat, fruit and vegetables.

The nightly performances on the open stage at the Kalare Night Bazaar seem to vary day by day, week by week, however they are always a treat to watch. The traditional Thai dance performances are especially good. They also have traditional puppet shows from time to time. You do not have to buy a meal to watch the performances, it is all free.

Have a browse around all the shops. Here you will find a far better quality product than found outside in the Night Bazaar. From very chic clothing shops, shoes shops, jewellers and some very talented sketch artists who can make a full canvas print from a small photo.

The Kalare Night Bazaar - check it out, you will be glad you did.
